The vision in the NHS 10-Year Plan is right. The ambition is clear. But ambition without delivery discipline is just a wish list. As someone who has spent the best part of twenty years delivering complex digital programmes inside the NHS, here is what I think it will actually take.
In 2014 I was asked to build a digital research infrastructure at The University of Oxford. Two years later we had a platform holding 6 million NHS patient records that enabled research studies that simply weren't possible before. The technology was the straightforward part.
The NHS National Programme for IT taught me things about delivery that 30 years of smaller engagements couldn't have. Here are the lessons that stayed with me.
